Heritage On Your Doorstep: Exploring Maghera

We have now completed Phase One of our β€˜Heritage on Your Doorstep: Exploring Maghera’ which focused upon the Megalithic period.

This phase included the creation of models of three Megalithic Sites in Maghera and the surrounding area which included :

Tirnony Dolman, Knockoneill Court Tomb and Tamneyrankin Court Tomb.

Currently we are  preparing an application for funding to  complete Phase Two of the project.

Within this phase we will transition into Medieval Period which includes Mullagh graveyard and St Lurach’s Church.

Following on from this there will be a model constructed of β€˜The  Emigrants Cairn’ illustrating the Famine Years .

Finally we will have Clarke Linen Mill in Upperlands in model form which illustrates the industrial revolution and was a driving force on the area as a major employer both directly by those working within the mill and indirectly via agriculture.

This site is of particular interest with its links to local famous Charles Thompson whose father worked in the mill prior to the families emigration and Charles’ rise to fame across the Atlantic.

Maghera Townlands

Maghera Townlands – Our Heritage to treasure

Maghera Townlands are very much part of who we are. They lie at the centre of life in most rural communities – and have done so since at least the 12th century. Each townland has built up its own history, traditions and stories over the years. Mostly this information lives only in the memories of the local people and was never formally written down.

With the Maghera Townlands Project, MHS Heritage & Culture set out to try to capture as much of these memories as possible before they are forgotten forever. The Project was made possible by a grant from the PEACE IV Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) for which we are very grateful.

Invitation for you…

This is an invitation to everybody who is interested in contributing to the project to record information about their own townland. Use this handout to write something about local characters, traditions, buildings, ruins, traditional meeting places, ceili houses, folklore, historic events, names of local families. etc,. All information, no matter how small, is welcome. Everything will help to build a picture of our local Townlands for generations to come.

Maghera gets knitting

Inspired by the great work of the Derry Square Knitters we are starting a group:Β Β Β Β Knitting Together: Maghera, to support their project.

The Square Knitters ask people to knit 6 inch squares from left-over wool. The squares are joined up to make blankets and these are shipped out to refugee camps where they are distributed to help those with babies and young children.
Aideen Hughes
from the group explained that they came together in response to the heart-breaking picture we all remember of littleΒ  Alan Kurdi’s body lying on a beach in Turkey as this project works to help other children who are still suffering as refugees.Β  Already well over 1000, blankets have been distributed and with people from the North going out to see the situation on the ground you can be sure that they are reaching those who need them the most.

As many of us have more time on our hands at the moment it seemed a good opportunity to start something positive and get involved in this great project. All you have to do is knit the squares and drop them in to usΒ at our new premises, Maghera Heritage CenterΒ 11 Main Street, Maghera BT46 5AAΒ  via appointment. We will arrange to have them joined together and passed on to the Derry Square Knitters who run regular shipments abroad.

When the current crisis is over, and we can meet up again, we hope to continue the workΒ in our premises and have more social occasions – but until then we can work together from home and feel we are making a positive contribution.

In addition it has been found that knitting reduces stress , can give an increased sense of well-being and promotes social connection. So all the more reason to get knitting!!

For more info or to arrange a drop off, get in touch.
